Amelia Sedley
Amelia Sedley is Becky Sharp's friend in Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray. A sheltered and sentimental youth, she is betrothed at a young age to her father's business partner's son, George Osbourne. After the financial ruin of her father, Amelia marries George and accompanies him to Brussels, where he is killed in the battle of Waterloo. She later gives birth to his son, Georgy. Throughout the novel Amelia struggles to remain loyal to George and his memory and is blind to the affection shown to her by his friend, William Dobbin. Eventually Amelia realizes that George was not the man she thought he was and can finally recognize Dobbin's love. They are married and have a daughter. Amelia is arguably one of the more sympathetic characters in a novel "without a hero" and focused primarily on satire and social criticism. She is based in part on Thackeray's own wife, who was "virtuous but weak". In Mira Nair's production of Vanity Fair, Amelia is played by Romola Garai. In the BBC miniseries "Vanity Fair" she is played by Frances Grey.
